A neck lift is perhaps the most compelling cosmetic surgery procedure that will truly make the right candidate look and feel ten years younger! A neck lift may be performed on its own, however it is usually performed in conjunction with a face lift, in order to create a more uniform and younger look for the entire face. A brow lift and upper or lower blepharoplasty may also be required to rejuvenate the entire face.

One of the first places that you can see the signs of aging is on the neck. It is common for the skin to become loose, as it loses its natural elasticity and muscles weaken. Indeed, this leads to the wrinkles and lines that people associate with older age. In addition, if you have lost a lot of weight, this can often make the skin on the neck loose, which can be mistaken for older age too.
The purpose of a neck lift is to address sagging skin and wrinkles that have formed on the neck to improve the appearance of the skin and encourage a more youthful look. Surgery will tighten the muscles and skin, diminishing vertical bands and loose skin permanently.

What Happens during a Neck Lift?

Our Dralso recommends that the skin is prepared 6 weeks prior to surgery with the topical use of vitamin A and glycolic acid for the best results.

A neck lift involves tightening the platysma muscles as well as re-draping or removing excess skin of the neck. In patients who carry a lot of weight in this area, some liposuction may be recommended. It is extremely important not to remove too much fat with liposuction as this can make the platysma muscles and submandibular (salivary) gland more prominent creating a gaunt look for the patient. Younger patients who only have excess fat in the neck area may only require liposuction with or without chin augmentation (genioplasty).

In an isolated neck lift, our Dr will make an incision in the submental area (underneath the chin) to access the platysma muscles. This incision is not always required in patients also having a facelift. Depending on the anatomy of the individual the platysma muscles will be tightened with sutures and the skin re-draped to create a tighter more defined jawline and a more youthful silhouette. It may be necessary to make small incisions behind each ear in order to remove and re-drape excess, loose skin. Patients often request a neck lift only, however it is important to understand that for many patients a neck lift on its own is not the perfect solution to achieving a younger, more attractive appearance. Our Dr often recommends a lower face lift in conjunction with a neck lift to achieve the best result.

Does a Neck Lift Hurt?

The neck lift procedure will not hurt as patients will go under general anaesthetic before they go into surgery. This ensures that the surgery is pain free and comfortable for the patient. But, it is important to remember that there can be some pain relief given after the surgery in order to deal with the after effects of the procedure.

Who is the Best Candidate for a Neck Lift?

The best candidate for this type of surgery is a non smoker. Smoking seriously affects wound healing and increases the chances of post operative complications.

What Happens after a Neck Lift?

After a neck lift, you can expect for there to be some swelling and bruising evident on the neck area. This is normal and will subside over time. Most patients will be required to stay in hospital overnight and wear a compression garment for up to 6 weeks to prevent excess swelling and haematoma formation. The garment will also help ensure that there is uniformity of skin tightening.

There is some downtime associated with a neck lift and most patients can resume work within 7 to 10 days but strenuous exercise should be avoided for up to 3 weeks. It is important to remember that every patient will be different and downtime can vary from person to person. Our Dr will be able to advice you on a one-to-one basis. As the skin will be sensitive and healing after a neck lift, it is recommended that you avoid being in direct sun light for a few weeks to ensure healthy healing.

The results of a neck lift will appear gradually over time as the area starts to heal. Usually, patients will see the full benefits of their neck lift within three to six months of having the procedure.
