Suitable candidates for a tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, have developed excess skin or flab around the belly. The causes are numerous, with the condition arising most commonly after a pregnancy or in cases where there has been dramatic weight loss. Some people think liposuction and tummy tuck are the same thing, but they are actually quite different, although they can work together to restore health and well-being.
Tummy tuck surgery has several benefits. Apart from removing excess skin, it also tightens the muscles and flattens the abdomen. A short consultation with your surgeon will help determine the best route moving forward liposuction, mini-abdominoplasty with a small scar, or a more extended abdominoplasty.
TUMMY TUCK SURGERY
Abdominoplasty involves an incision to remove flabby skin and fat deposits. Healthy, taught skin is then stretched to close the wound. Muscles in the belly might also require stitching to restore them to their original condition and position. Your surgeon will contour the skin, muscles and tissue for best results. Tummy tuck surgery is ideal for those whose belly condition is not responding to regular exercise, and can be undertaken by both women and men who are in good general health.
RECOVERY AFTER SURGERY
Abdominoplasty is a safe but invasive surgery requiring a hospital stay for a couple of days followed by steady recovery at home. Apart from the scar, which will lighten over time, general improved appearance will be immediately appreciated.
During the time in hospital, excess fluids will be drained from the tummy. You will also be required to wear a firm elastic bandage to promote healing for a time. Our Dr will provide all support and information regarding the healing process including bandage care, remaining comfortable, and expected outcomes during the following months.
ARE THERE ANY RISKS WITH ABDOMINOPLASTY SURGERY?
There is a small risk of complication post surgery, however, your condition will be monitored during the hospital stay to ensure a timely recovery from the tummy tuck. Occasionally, bleeding can occur directly after the operation, and this will be corrected in the operating theatre. As with any surgery, there is also the risk of infection, and your doctor will be on-hand to assist with recovery.
If you are a smoker, you will be required to quit smoking several weeks prior to surgery and refrain from smoking for several weeks after surgery. Smoking can cause complications in the surgery and will also slow down the healing phase. There is every chance that after a few weeks of not smoking you will want to quit for good – a bonus to complement your reborn body shape.
You will also need to tell the doctor if you are taking any medications, including prescription drugs and supplements. Surgery is a partnership that requires honesty and accountability both from the surgeon and the patient.
RECOVERING AT HOME
Abdominoplasty is a surgery that requires some advance planning. Before going to the hospital on the day of the operation, get a few essentials ready for your return home. It will be a few weeks before time comes to step out in tight fitting clothing, so have some comfortable loose fitting garments ready for your recovery at home. Place a chair in the bathroom so you can shower sitting down, and if possible invest in a hand-held shower head. Keep some ice packs in the freezer, and purchase any jelly or cream that the doctor recommends. You will need a friend, family member or taxi to take you home after surgery, as driving will be uncomfortable and potentially dangerous.
LONG TERM IMPROVEMENT
You will like the way you look immediately after surgery, but complete comfort and mobility can take a few weeks to a few months. Don’t despair, as improvements are ongoing and permanent. Some people are able to return to work after two weeks, but this will be dependent on the physical nature of your employment plus your general rate of recovery.
You may experience numbness, bruising and associated soreness during recovery. These are perfectly natural symptoms of a body healing itself, but if pain is an issue your doctor will prescribe the appropriate medication.
